New AFPI CEO Vows a Revitalized Partnership with Rail Stakeholders

Newly-appointed President and CEO of AF Payments Inc. (AFPI) Jonathan Juan “JJ” Moreno recently paid courtesy calls to the company’s rail stakeholders to reiterate its commitment of a revitalized and dynamic partnership, while continuing to explore areas of mutual interest.

Since his appointment in January 2022, Mr. Moreno has met with key executives including Department of Transportation (DOTr) Undersecretary for Railways Timothy John R. Batan, LRT 1 Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) President and CEO Juan F. Alfonso, LRT 2 Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) Administrator Jeremy Regino, DOTr-MRT 3 OIC General Manager Michael J. Capati, Philippine National Railways (PNR) General Manager Junn Magno, Public Private Partnership (PPP) Center Executive Director Ferdinand A. Pecson, and the DOTr Automatic Fare Collection System (AFCS) Program Office Team.

In all of these discussions, AFPI conveyed its sustained focus in ensuring an efficient and reliable AFCS infrastructure set-up at the light rail network, offering a wide array of services to its growing cardholder base under its beep™ brand, promoting transportation governance through the use of data analytics, introducing innovative solutions such as QR ticketing, and supporting efforts to fully integrate public transportation in the Philippines.

“These cordial and productive discussions set the tone for our continued engagement with our valued rail stakeholders, while we actively pursue opportunities in the ever-evolving payments landscape. We want our beep™ cards to be ubiquitous, offering not just convenience for commuters, but a variety of incentives to encourage frequent card usage and expansion of acceptance points beyond the transportation sector, similar to how contactless smart cards are being used in places like Hong Kong, Singapore and London,” Mr. Moreno said.

Meanwhile, AFPI continues to engage with various private and public sector partners and collaborators in applying its extensive rail AFCS track record and experience to major flagship projects such as the recently launched LRT 2 East Extension Project and the LRT 1 Cavite Extension Project.

Since 2015, AFPI has been serving as concessionaire to the 10-year Rail AFCS PPP Project in the light rail network, maintaining the AFCS infrastructure of LRT Lines 1 and 2 and MRT 3. Thereafter, AFPI has issued close to 9 million contactless cards under its beep™ brand, while expanding the use of its fare ticketing, fare collection and associated services beyond the rail network, including buses, modern jeepneys and ferry services.
